Who We Are:

Calico (Calico Life Sciences LLC) is an Alphabet-founded research and development company whose mission is to harness advanced technologies and model systems to increase our understanding of the biology that controls human aging. Calico will use that knowledge to devise interventions that enable people to lead longer and healthier lives. Position Description:

We are seeking a conscientious and hands-on Accounting Manager who combines strong accounting knowledge with a passion for data automation and intelligent reporting. This role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of accounting, systems, and analytics.

Our Accounting team operates with a lean structure and a strong foundation of collaboration and compliance. The Accounting Manager will play a key role in continuing to automate Calico workflows and taking our already efficient, technology-enabled accounting operations to the next level.

This position will report to our Controller and work closely with various teams at Calico. Essential functions of this position include, but not limited to:

  • Lead parts of the monthly accounting close process, including preparation and review of journal entries, reconciliations, and management reports
  • Be responsible for the fixed asset function, including fixed asset additions, deletions and depreciations
  • Lead clinical trial expense accruals, working closely with Clinical Operations to ensure accuracy and transparency in accounting
  • Be responsible for various other account accruals
  • Analyze existing workflows, and design and implement automation enhancements that improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability
  • Identify opportunities to apply Gemini-enabled AI tools and other emerging technologies to accounting workflows
  • Ensure compliance with US GAAP and company accounting policies
  • Document and maintain effective internal controls, ensuring compliance with company policies and SOX requirements
  • Initially support and ultimately manage various tax reporting requirements

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance, with a minor in Computer Science, Data Analytics, or a related field, or vice versa
  • 8+ years’ experience, ideally with experience in public or technical accounting
  • Hands-on experience with NetSuite and account reconciliation systems
  • Proven ability to automate and optimize accounting workflows, ideally including Excel-to-NetSuite journal automation
  • Experience with clinical trial accruals or biotech/pharma industry accounting preferred
  • Solid understanding of the US GAAP and internal controls
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure a high degree of accuracy
  • Superior problem-solving skills and strong desire to go the extra mile to find root causes of and solve problems
  • Strong analytical skills, systems thinking, and a continuous improvement mindset
  • Ability to multi-task to balance multiple requests without losing sight of overall objectives and deadlines
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Must be willing to work onsite at least 4 days a week

The estimated base salary range for this role is $182,000 - $186,000. Actual pay will be based on a number of factors including experience and qualifications. This position is also eligible for two annual cash bonuses.
