Senior Research Associate (Protein Sciences) South San Francisco, CA
Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Research Associate to join our R&D organization and support the development of protein- and enzyme-based platforms for next-generation molecular biology applications. This role will focus on protein expression, purification, and characterization, in close collaboration with protein engineering, molecular biology, and automation teams. The ideal candidate is hands-on, detail-oriented, and comfortable operating in a fast-paced R&D environment with evolving priorities. You will play a key role in building and scaling robust protein production workflows to support research, screening, and product development efforts.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate closely with scientists and cross-functional partners to design, plan, and execute protein expression and purification experiments supporting Enzyme Engineering R&D programs.
- Develop, optimize, and scale protein expression systems across multiple hosts (e.g., E. coli, Pichia pastoris, Bacillus), from small-scale HTP screens to multi-liter cultures.
- Optimize enzyme purification techniques via small scale affinity purification to FPLC purification.
- Perform protein purification and method development using affinity chromatography, ion exchange, and size-exclusion chromatography on FPLC systems.
- Execute routine and novel biochemical workflows with a high level of rigor, reproducibility, and attention to detail.
● Run protein characterization and QC, including SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, analytical SEC, and enzyme activity or purity assays.
- Maintain detailed experimental documentation and communicate results, interpretations, and next steps clearly to the team.
● Contribute to continuous improvement of protein production workflows, including troubleshooting, process optimization, and standardization.
- Support lab operations as needed, including equipment maintenance and coordination with internal stakeholders.
Qualifications and Required Skills
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a closely related field..
- Strong foundation in molecular biology techniques, including molecular cloning, PCR/qPCR, DNA purification and quantification, and enzymatic assays.
- Hands-on experience (1–3+ years) with protein expression and purification workflows, including:
- High throughput protein quantification methods (Qubit, Nanodrop, Bradford)
- Protein buffer exchange methods (Dialysis, Desalting, Concentration)
- FPLC-based purification (IMAC, IEX, SEC)
- SDS-PAGE and Western blotting
- Protein handling, storage, and stability considerations
- Demonstrated ability to plan experiments, document work rigorously, and communicate results effectively.
- Dynamic interpersonal skills. Respectful and open to others’ views; contribute to building a positive team spirit.
- Self-motivated, willing to learn and keep abreast of new research developments
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and able to multitask well to handle multiple projects.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with multiple methods of DNA assembly and analysis (golden gate assembly, Gibson assembly and gel electrophoresis)
- Experience with one or more specialized molecular biology aspects (i.e. specific knowledge towards DNA/RNA modifying enzymes like polymerases or ligases, cell-free protein expression, protein engineering)
- Familiarity with high-throughput or automated workflows for protein production or assay development.
- Experience with NGS library preparation techniques and hands-on experience using NGS sequencing platforms
About Twist Bioscience
Twist Bioscience synthesizes genes from scratch, known as “writing” DNA. Just as children learn to both read and write, the next phase of development for the genomics revolution is the ability to write DNA.
At Twist Bioscience, we work in service of people who are changing the world for the better. In fields such as health care, agriculture, industrial chemicals and data storage, our unique silicon-based DNA Synthesis Platform provides precision at a scale that is otherwise unavailable to our customers.
