Job Description

About Hexagon Bio

Hexagon Bio is a drug discovery company focused on identifying and developing novel payloads for next-generation antibody drug conjugates (ADCs). We combine genomics, data science, machine learning, synthetic biology, automation and medicinal chemistry to discover potent small molecules encoded in microbial genomes and advance them toward transformative medicines.

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to take a leading role in building and evolving Tracker, Hexagon Bio’s internal platform that powers our discovery engine. Tracker is used daily across biology, chemistry and data science teams to track samples and experiments, orchestrate laboratory and computational workflows, and analyze experimental results.

In this role, you will serve as the technical lead for software engineering, combining hands-on development with ownership of system architecture, technical direction and engineering best practices. You will work closely with scientific leaders and company leadership to ensure our software scales with the science, while mentoring and supporting other engineers as the team grows.

This is an opportunity to shape both the technology and the team at the core of a next-generation drug discovery company.

This is an onsite role at Hexagon’s office in Menlo Park, California.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the technical design and evolution of Tracker, Hexagon Bio’s full-stack data and workflow platform.
  • Own system architecture and make thoughtful tradeoffs around scalability, flexibility, and long-term maintainability.
  • Build critical features end-to-end, remaining deeply hands-on in the codebase.
  • Partner closely with biologists, chemists and data scientists to translate multi-faceted, evolving scientific workflows into robust software systems.
  • Define and evolve data models that capture complex biological and chemical relationships across experiments and pipelines.
  • Guide integrations with laboratory automation, analysis pipelines, and external tools.
  • Establish and champion software engineering best practices, including code quality, testing, documentation, and operational excellence.
  • Mentor and support other engineers, providing technical guidance, code review, and context as the team grows.

What We’re Looking For

  • Significant experience in software engineering, with a track record of owning and delivering complex systems in production.
  • Strong proficiency in Python or deep experience in another modern programming language.
  • Experience designing and evolving system architectures and data models for complex, real-world domains.
  • Comfort working across the full stack and understanding how backend systems, data models, and user workflows fit together.
  • Experience collaborating closely with non-software users and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technically: setting direction, making decisions, and raising the bar for code quality and reliability.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to provide clarity in ambiguous or rapidly evolving environments.
  • Interest in biotech or drug discovery is a plus, but prior domain experience is not required.

What We Offer

  • A senior, high-impact role with ownership over a mission-critical platform.
  • The opportunity to shape the software engineering function at an early stage.
  • A collaborative, transparent culture with regular All Hands meetings.
  • Competitive compensation and opportunities for growth.
  • Access to Menlo Park Labs amenities, including shuttle service, gym, climbing wall, pool, sports courts, café, bike storage, and EV charging.
  • Team-building events, including Hexagon Happy Hours and company celebrations.

Additional Information

The salary range is dependent on the level of Software Engineer that is hired. The salary range for this position is $155,000- $205,000. Our salary ranges are determined by role and level.
