Role Overview

Bristol Myers Squibb is seeking a highly experienced leader to serve as Executive Director, Unified Lab & Experimental Platforms, responsible for enabling a seamless, modality-agnostic digital lab ecosystem across Research & Development. This leader will partner deeply with Research leadership, design and chemistry units, and laboratory leaders to deliver the lab applications, AI capabilities, lab operations, and data-capture infrastructure that support lab knowledge creation, capture, analysis, and workflow orchestration across diverse scientific domains—including translational and CLIA-regulated lab environments.

The role focuses on building an integrated, AI-enabled, future-ready lab environment that connects instruments, scientists, and digital applications into a cohesive and scalable system, while ensuring that regulated environments operate at the highest standards of quality and compliance. Together with peer BI&T leaders, this role contributes to a multi-year vision of fully integrated AI, data, and systems—ensuring deep understanding of how experimental data and knowledge flow across Research and into downstream Development.

Reporting to the Vice President of Research Business Insights & Technology (BI&T), this leader will operate as part of a unified BI&T leadership team and act as a trusted partner to Research leadership, translating scientific needs into scalable, integrated technology solutions. The leader will work closely with BMS’s dedicated R&D Data organization on the data products that flow downstream from lab systems.

Mission & Impact

  • Partner with Research leadership to translate scientific strategy into a unified, modality-agnostic lab application and experimental platform footprint across R&D, including regulated/CLIA environments
  • Drive the lab application backbone—electronic lab notebooks (ELN), LIMS, and entity registration systems—as a shared, reusable foundation for all Research
  • Strategically design AI-native lab functionality (not just digitizing existing processes) to enable a cohesive, integrated lab-in-the-loop way of working across instruments, assays, and applications
  • Advance lab-in-the-loop AI, including AI image analysis (digital pathology, high-content screening), agentic instrument and assay workflows, and predictive instrument maintenance
  • Build toward a multi-year vision of fully integrated AI, data, and systems across the lab ecosystem—ensuring experimental data and knowledge flow seamlessly into downstream Development
  • Reduce fragmentation across lab applications while maintaining regulated-environment quality, compliance, and auditability

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with research scientists, design and chemistry leaders, and laboratory leadership to shape and deliver the lab application and experimental platform roadmap
  • Define and execute the Unified Lab technology strategy, spanning:
    • Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELN)
    • LIMS
    • Entity registration systems
    • Sample management
    • Lab data capture and integration
    • AI-native, bi-directional data and orchestration technologies
  • Lead deployment of GenAI, agents, and ML capabilities for lab workflows (e.g., AI image analysis for digital pathology/high-content screening, predictive instrument maintenance, agentic assay execution, AI-driven assay/method recommendation)
  • Drive adoption and optimization of the lab application backbone (ELN, LIMS, entity registration, and associated lab workflows), ensuring usability, scalability, and alignment with scientific workflows
  • Design and implement lab connectivity frameworks, enabling real-time data capture from instruments and lab systems
  • Advance lab automation capabilities, working closely with scientific and engineering teams
  • Develop and implement strategies for lab virtualization, enabling remote access, simulation, and digital experimentation environments
  • Establish and evolve Lab-as-a-Service models, enabling scalable, on-demand lab capabilities
  • Own the operational excellence and compliance posture of regulated/CLIA labs, partnering closely with Quality and Compliance functions
  • Partner with the R&D Data organization on lab data product strategy and downstream curation
  • Partner with downstream Development teams (e.g., manufacturing and GxP lab functions) to ensure lab knowledge and data flow seamlessly across the pipeline
  • Collaborate with data, AI, and platform teams to ensure integration with broader data and analytics ecosystems
  • Lead and develop a team of lab informatics experts, engineers, and product managers
  • Manage relationships with key vendors and partners in the lab technology ecosystem

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Life Sciences, Chemistry, Engineering, or related field (Ph.D. preferred)
  • 12–15+ years of experience in R&D IT, lab informatics, or scientific technology roles
  • Deep hands-on experience with ELN, LIMS, lab instrumentation, lab data systems, and lab automation
  • Strong understanding of end-to-end lab operations across research environments
  • Experience implementing or managing:
    • Lab automation systems
    • Digital lab platforms
    • Data capture and integration pipelines
  • Experience supporting or integrating with manufacturing/GxP lab environments
  • Proven leadership experience at Director or Senior Director level

Critical Capabilities

  • Lab Domain Expertise:  Deep understanding of how labs operate across modalities and how scientists interact with systems and data—paired with the ability to act as a trusted partner to Research leadership in translating scientific needs into integrated technology solutions
  • Digital Lab Vision: Ability to define and execute a roadmap toward a fully connected, automated, and virtualized lab, including hands-on fluency operating in regulated environments (e.g., CLIA, GLP) with appropriate quality, compliance, and auditability
  • Integration Mindset: Expertise in connecting instruments, data systems, and workflows into a unified ecosystem
  • Technology Fluency : Familiarity cloud platforms, data architectures, and workflow orchestration tools, with key focus on lab-in-the-loop AI (including image AI, agentic instrument/assay workflows, and predictive maintenance)
  • Execution at Scale: Proven ability to move from pilots and point solutions to enterprise-wide adoption
