Job Description

At the UK National Measurement Laboratory (NML) for chemical and bio-measurements, we deliver world-leading measurement science to solve complex global challenges.

Within the NML, the Inorganic Analysis team is involved in a range of national and international research projects. They establish reference methodologies, high-accuracy calibration, measurement services, and guidelines that support LGC’s position as the NML. The team also performs contract research and development projects for a broad spectrum of clients in the public and private sectors. Their setup includes an extensive variety of mass spectrometric techniques for elemental analysis, nanomaterials characterization, organo-metallic speciation, isotope ratio measurements, and solid sampling and imaging applications. Instrumentation includes particle tracking analysis, multi-angle dynamic and static light scattering, elemental analyzer-IRMS, ESI MS/MS, and ICP-MS (single and triple quadrupole, magnetic sector, time-of-flight, and multi-collector) paired with LC, GC, asymmetrical flow field-flow-fractionation (AF4), gravitational field-flow-fractionation, and laser ablation.

The job holder will support the creation, improvement, and validation of analytical methods to aid NML work. This role focuses especially on quantitative LA-ICPMS imaging and single cell ICPMS analysis. They must apply advanced instrumental techniques and use various sample preparation methods, with training provided.

  • Support delivery, jointly with senior leads, of commercial/collaborative work related to quantitative LA-ICPMS imaging.
  • Develop and complete analytical methodologies (ICPMS, Laser ablation, single cell) for quantitative elemental analysis.
  • Maintain written records in accordance with company quality procedures, and review colleagues' work to the same standard.
  • Provide presentations, training and advice to others to share findings and promote increased scientific understanding around analytical methodology.
  • Assist in maintaining equipment calibration, instrument preventive maintenance, and inventory management for imaging and single cell areas.
  • Follow relevant procedures and work instructions to ensure efficiency and compliance with quality and safety standards.
  • Stay informed about recent advancements in analytical techniques, new methodologies, and technologies related to LA-ICPMS imaging and single cell analysis.
