The Protein Homeostasis Thematic Research Center at BMS is a fundamental Oncology research engine delivering oncology and hematology therapeutics to patients. The TRC has a major focus on exploiting BMS’ expertise in protein degradation to discover and develop therapies aimed at tumor intrinsic vulnerabilities and mechanisms of resistance to existing cancer therapeutics. This focus on protein degradation allows us to attack protein classes that were previously deemed undruggable.

Position Summary

The Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology Group in the Protein Homeostasis TRC at Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) focuses on delivering novel cancer therapeutics by engaging E3 ubiquitin ligases for targeted protein degradation. We are seeking a motivated Senior Associate Scientist with broad experience and understanding of the small-molecule drug discovery processes. The successful candidate will work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment to 1) develop and implement robust cellular assays to support discovery of small molecules as clinical development candidates; and 2) execute in vitro studies that further our understanding of the mechanisms of novel compounds. The desired candidate should have broad experience in cell biology and molecular biology techniques and a willingness to learn. Responsibilities include utilizing cellular models and molecular techniques to develop and execute SAR assays, execution and analysis of mechanism of action (MoA) studies, and development of new in vitro assays. The candidate will work within discovery project teams and with scientists across different functional areas and is expected to contribute to project based decisions.

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Design, develop, and implement cell-based and biochemical assays to support target identification and validation, as well as SAR assays and MoA studies for novel chemical matters

  • Construct and engineer cell lines and tools for MoA studies

  • Design and execute experiments using expertise in cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry and assay development to support SAR and MoA studies

  • Optimize and assist running compound or functional genomics screens

  • Analyze, interpret, and present data in an organized and timely manner

  • Support biology needs for different projects and drug discovery teams

Experience =

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

    • 4+ years of academic and / or industry experience

Or

  • Master’s Degree

    • 2+ years of academic and / or industry experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience conducting SAR assays and/or MoA studies in academic or industry settings using biological and biochemical assays

  • Familiarity with small molecule drug discovery and lead identification/optimization is a plus

  • Proficiency in a broad range of assays, including but not limited to: DNA & RNA isolation, qPCR, western blotting, JESS, proliferation assays, cell cycle assays, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, and IncuCyte. Willingness to expand technical expertise as needed

  • Excellent sterile mammalian cell culture technique and proficiency in related techniques, such as lentivirus preparation, transfection of cell lines, CRISPR knockout, siRNA knockdown

  • Strong analytical skills and ability to independently design experiments with proper controls and interpret results by applying scientific knowledge and logical reasoning

  • Excellent communication, presentation, collaboration, and organizational skills.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to deliver high-quality results in a timely and well-organized manner

  • Ability to handle multiple projects and work in a fast-paced dynamic team environment; flexibility to adapt to changes with a positive attitude

Compensation Overview:

San Diego - CA - US: $100,480 - $121,756

The starting compensation range(s) for this role are listed above for a full-time employee (FTE) basis. Additional incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility) may be available. The starting pay rate takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills, where the job is performed, the employee’s work schedule, job-related knowledge, and experience. Final, individual compensation will be decided based on demonstrated experience.

Paid Time Off

  • US Exempt Employees: flexible time off (unlimited, with manager approval, 11 paid national holidays (not applicable to employees in Phoenix, AZ, Puerto Rico or Rayzebio employees)

  • Phoenix, AZ, Puerto Rico and Rayzebio Exempt, Non-Exempt, Hourly Employees: 160 hours annual paid vacation for new hires with manager approval, 11 national holidays, and 3 optional holidays

Based on eligibility*, additional time off for employees may include unlimited paid sick time, up to 2 paid volunteer days per year, summer hours flexibility, leaves of absence for medical, personal, parental, caregiver, bereavement, and military needs and an annual Global Shutdown between Christmas and New Years Day.

All global employees full and part-time who are actively employed at and paid directly by BMS at the end of the calendar year are eligible to take advantage of the Global Shutdown.

*Eligibility Disclosure: The summer hours program is for United States (U.S.) office-based employees due to the unique nature of their work. Summer hours are generally not available for field sales and manufacturing operations and may also be limited for the capability centers. Employees in remote-by-design or lab-based roles may be eligible for summer hours, depending on the nature of their work, and should discuss eligibility with their manager. Employees covered under a collective bargaining agreement should consult that document to determine if they are eligible. Contractors, leased workers and other service providers are not eligible to participate in the program.
