ROLE SUMMARY
PGS’s Environmental Sustainability team manages environmental sustainability risks and opportunities across the enterprise and drives the integration of sustainability into business strategy, operations, product development, and supply chain management to support Pfizer’s 2040 Net Zero commitment and broader environmental ambitions.

In this role, the Environmental Senior Manager is responsible for developing strategies and solutions related to climate, biodiversity and nature, and product sustainability programs across Pfizer’s internal and external manufacturing network, which includes leading projects and programs both within PGS and across Pfizer, and developing and managing plans to achieve objectives. The role applies advanced knowledge of environmental sustainability and related disciplines to design programs that enable the organization to meet strategic objectives, while anticipating internal and external business, regulatory, and compliance issues. The role partners with External Supply and Procurement to progress net zero delivery with suppliers and serves as an advisor across the organization by providing technical support and guidance, and by working collaboratively to solve problems.

In addition, the role helps implement the framework used to track and assess emerging environmental regulations and associated business risk across the geographies in which Pfizer operates.

Finally, the Sr Manager Sustainability leads cross-functional teams, driving alignment and broader organizational outcomes without relying on direct reporting authority. It operates independently in many situations, identifies innovative solutions to complex problems, exercises foresight and judgment, and recommends courses of action. The role is recognized internally and externally as a subject matter expert in sustainability.

• Develop and implement sustainability strategies and programs, including Scope 3 emissions reduction, sustainable sourcing, biodiversity and nature, product sustainability, and responsible supply chain initiatives.
• Manage Pfizer's Scope 3 program by conducting supply chain analyses, identifying emissions reduction opportunities, tracking progress, and coordinating implementation activities across cross-functional workstreams sponsored by the Net Zero Core Team.
• Partner with External Supply and Procurement to evolve and progress the net zero strategy for suppliers, including CMOs, on emissions reduction expectations, data quality, and improvement plans; provide practical guidance on implementation and execution.
• Develop, monitor, analyze, and communicate sustainability performance metrics and key performance indicators to support decision-making, target setting, and program reporting.
• Facilitate cross-functional teams, including the Sustainable Sourcing Council, Sustainable Raw Materials Team, Traceability Team, Scope 3 Working Group, and other project teams, to advance sustainability objectives and integrate environmental considerations into business processes and sourcing decisions.
• Monitor voluntary frameworks, customer expectations, and industry trends related to climate, biodiversity, nature, and sustainable sourcing; assess potential business impacts and develop appropriate response plans and compliance actions.
• Implement a framework for tracking and assessing emerging environmental sustainability regulations and associated impacts across the regions in which Pfizer operates, including horizon-scanning routines, impact and risk assessment criteria, and periodic reporting that enables Pfizer to develop compliance actions plans.
• Develop and implement sustainability-related governance processes, risk assessments, and compliance programs by coordinating stakeholders, tracking actions, and developing supporting materials and recommendations.
• Develop sustainability guidance documents, playbooks, training programs, communication materials, and decision-support tools that enable colleagues to incorporate sustainability considerations into day-to-day business decisions.
• Research and evaluate scientific, regulatory, and industry developments related to sustainability topics
• Represent Pfizer on external sustainability initiatives, industry working groups, and collaborative partnerships; contribute to thought leadership, benchmarking, and information-sharing activities that support Pfizer's sustainability goals.
• Serve as an environmental sustainability subject matter expert and trusted resource to colleagues across Pfizer

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• Applicant must have a bachelor's degree with at least 6 years of experience; OR a master's degree with at least 5 years of experience; OR a PhD with 1+ years of experience. 
• Experienced in supporting the development of corporate sustainability programs from strategy through execution in a large, complex, matrixed organization.
• Possesses technical knowledge and expertise across multiple sustainability domains: climate / greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting, scope 3 / supply chain emissions reductions approaches; nature and biodiversity frameworks and emerging product sustainability regulations.
• Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams
• Strong analytical and data management skills
• Operates with minimal supervision and oversight
• Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to translate scientific and technical content into executive-ready narratives for internal and external audiences
• Experience developing and delivering training programs and sustainability playbooks to technical audiences

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Proven ability to influence peers and senior colleagues outside of core function to deliver results
• Experienced developing and implementing environmental strategies related to regulatory compliance and voluntary frameworks in the sustainability sector
• Experienced in external thought leadership, including participating in or leading industry working groups, serving on advisory boards, and contributing to public-facing sector guidance or policy frameworks
• Experience in pharmaceutical environmental stewardship, including familiarity with product level life cycle assessments and developing product carbon footprints (PCFs)
• Experience engaging external manufacturing partners, contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs), or strategic suppliers on decarbonization goals, emissions data quality, and environmental performance improvement
• Working knowledge of the global environmental regulatory landscape, including climate, nature, and sustainability disclosure requirements across multiple regions

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

• Due to the nature of work assignments, the role holder must be able to perform some work with limited oversight, under time constraints, while advancing long term priorities. 
• Overall physical fitness to enable travel to locations where Pfizer conducts business, including internal sites, external suppliers and peer company facilities. This will require the ability to carry necessary work materials e.g. laptop etc, to stoop; to reach; to sit / stand / walk for extended periods of time; ability to climb stairs; and to use personal protective equipment including respiratory protection and hearing protection.

Daily interactions with colleagues through face to face or virtual meetings enabled using technology such as Webex or Microsoft Teams and video conference requiring ability to effectively exchange ideas and information with colleagues using these systems.

• Ability to travel domestically and internationally (estimated to be <10% of time)
• Ability to work outside standard working hours at times (early mornings / evenings) to manage geographically diverse relationships; and maintain communications / networks across a global network

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $124,400.00 to $207,400.00.* In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer’s Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 17.5% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program.
